Everything you'd like to know before you float.
Honest answers to the questions we hear every day. Use the search to jump straight to yours, and if it isn't here, just call 061 424 765 and ask away. There's no such thing as a silly question about floating.
How is the float room and pod cleaned?
Both the Float Room and the i-sopod float tank have a powerful but quiet magnetic-drive pump with a high-capacity filtration system, which cleans the float solution a minimum of four times while each client is showering and dressing. The salt itself is naturally antimicrobial too.
What do I wear in the float room?
We recommend wearing nothing at all, so you feel truly free and aren't distracted by clothing. We completely understand that can feel daunting the first time, so you're very welcome to wear a swimsuit if you like. You have your own private room either way.
Can I drown if I fall asleep?
No. Some people do fall asleep, but the water is so buoyant that you simply stay afloat.
What are Epsom salts, and are they good for the skin?
Epsom salt is a magnesium-rich mineral used for centuries to improve sleep and ease pain, cramping, headaches and muscle ache. There's 550kg of Epsom salt dissolved in each float pod.
Will the salt dry out or damage my hair?
As long as you wash and condition your hair after each float, the magnesium in the Epsom salt will actually improve the condition of your hair and scalp rather than damage it.
What is the best time of day to float?
Any time is a good time. Some people float early in the morning to clear the mind and sharpen focus for the day. Some prefer midday or early afternoon to split the day up and rest, like an afternoon nap. Others float in the evening to relax afterwards and make the most of the sleep benefits.
I'm pregnant. Can I float?
Absolutely! Floating can relieve many of the aches and pains of pregnancy, and many expectant mums say the pod is the only place they feel truly weightless. We'd advise against floating in your first trimester, and if you have any concerns please check with your physician before coming in.
Can I float while menstruating?
Yes. It can be the perfect way to nourish yourself and encourage your muscles to relax if you get cramps. Just follow the same process as you would for swimming.
I'm claustrophobic. Can I float?
It's a common worry, and it's exactly why we chose the i-sopod and built our Double Float Room. The i-sopod is much bigger than people expect: 8 feet long and 5 feet wide, so big you can stretch out without touching the sides. You can leave the door open slightly or keep the inside light on as long as you like. You're in complete control, and most people are surprised by how safe and free it feels.
Will I get dehydrated from floating?
The high salt concentration can be slightly dehydrating, so just make sure you're well hydrated before and after your float and you won't notice any difference.
How long do the benefits last?
Benefits such as reduced anxiety and improved sleep have been scientifically shown to last several days after a single session. Everyone is different and results vary, but floating regularly has a cumulative effect: the benefits build.
Should I tell you about health conditions?
Yes please. Let us know about any health conditions, for example diabetes or high or low blood pressure. If you have any concerns, check with your doctor before floating.
Can I float with a skin condition?
Epsom salt can sting broken skin, so we recommend not floating during a flare-up of eczema or psoriasis. That said, many people with recurring eczema or psoriasis find floating helps: magnesium is naturally antimicrobial and antibacterial, and floating lowers cortisol, the stress hormone that flare-ups are often linked to. If you'd like to float with a small irritated area, a little Vaseline over it can ease any sting. If in doubt, have a word with your doctor first.
Can I float with low blood pressure?
Floating is proven to reduce blood pressure, so if yours runs low, please check with your doctor before floating.
Can I float with epilepsy?
For safety reasons, we're not able to offer floating to people with epilepsy.
How is floating different from sensory deprivation or isolation tanks?
It's the same idea, modernised and improved immeasurably since the tanks of a few decades ago, and given a much friendlier name!
What can I expect from my first float?
Most people emerge feeling refreshed and relaxed with a clearer head. The benefits are a little different for everyone, so come with an open mind. It can take a few floats to learn how to fully switch off, so stick with it if you feel you could have relaxed more deeply.
Is there a minimum age?
You must be over 16 to float. Under-16s may be allowed to float with a parent or guardian in the room. Please contact us about this and we'll happily arrange it.
Are there any weight restrictions?
None at all. The salt can hold anyone afloat.
Can I drink alcohol and float?
Being under the influence in the float room would be an unpleasant experience. We don't recommend it, and we don't allow floating under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
What if I dye my hair?
Generally no problem. If your colour is fresh (less than 10 days old), please wait, as we'd hate to see expensive hair work damaged, and we'll happily reschedule you. If you use keratin treatments, salt water (including float tanks) is best avoided. If you're unsure, ask your hairdresser before you float.
